Sausage, White Cheddar and Green Onion Pinwheels

When it comes to appetizers that impress without the stress, these Sausage, White Cheddar and Green Onion Pinwheels are a must-try. This recipe is perfect for hosting a brunch or holiday gathering. The best part? You can make them ahead and keep them in the freezer, ready to bake whenever you need a warm, savory bite.

Making the Pinwheels

To start, unroll your thawed puff pastry on a lightly floured surface to keep it from sticking. Anyone who knows me knows that I always keep at least two packages of puff pastries in my freezer - they are just so good.

Spread a thin, even layer of mild pork or breakfast sausage over the pastry, leaving about a quarter-inch border around the edges. This little bit of space helps seal everything neatly later on.

Placing sausage on pastry.

Using the 4″ Vegetable Knife finely chop your green onion. The green onions add a fresh pop of flavor that balances the richness of the sausage and cheese.

Finely chopped green onionSprinkle the chopped green onions and shredded white cheddar cheese evenly over the sausage.

Now, we roll! Beginning at one end of the pastry, carefully roll it tightly into a log. Once you reach the edge, brush a bit of beaten egg along the border to help seal the roll closed. Wrap the pastry log in plastic wrap and place it in the freezer for at least two hours. Freezing not only helps the flavors meld together but also makes it much easier to slice later. What I love about this recipe is you can prepare the roll ahead of time and keep it in the freezer for up to a month. That means you’ll always have an appetizer ready to go at a moment’s notice.

When you’re ready to bake, preheat your oven to 400 F. Remove the roll from the freezer and let it thaw just enough to slice. Using the 7-3/4" Petite Slicer, slice the log into half-inch rounds. I like to use my knuckle to measure each mark so I know where to cut and so each cut is even.

Arrange the pinwheels on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the sausage is fully cooked through. Once they’re out of the oven, let the pinwheels cool slightly before serving. These Sausage, White Cheddar and Green Onion Pinwheels are guaranteed to become a go-to favorite. They are crispy, cheesy and packed with comfort in every bite. Come have a taste!

Ingredients

  • 1 frozen puff pastry sheet, thawed
  • 1-pound mild pork or breakfast sausage
  • 1/3 cup green onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup white cheddar cheese
  • 1 egg, beaten

Directions

  1. Unroll the thawed puff pastry on a floured surface.
  2. Spread sausage on pastry, leaving a 1/4-inch border.
  3. Sprinkle with the green onion and cheese.
  4. Take one end of the pastry and start rolling the pastry, brushing the end border with an egg wash. Wrap with plastic wrap and freeze for at least 2 hours. This helps when it’s time to slice the roll. When you're ready to bake, preheat the oven to 400 F.
  5. Let the roll thaw just enough to slice with a knife. Slice 1/2-inch pinwheels.
  6. Put the pinwheels onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake 40-45 minutes until the sausage is fully cooked.
  7. Remove from oven and serve.

*The roll can stay in the freezer up to 1 month before using.
