Celebrate National Knife Month With Cutco
In August, we honour the everyday tool that makes a difference.
What Is National Knife Month?
Where would we be without the knife? For all it has provided us, it deserves a celebration! Every August, National Knife Month shines a light on the skilled professionals who make knives, the history of knives and how much this simple and useful tool has changed our lives. It also honours brands, like Cutco® and its sister company KA-BAR® that carry on the tradition of quality knife-making.
Save the Date – National Knife Day August 24 is National Knife Day. It’s a day to celebrate the legacy, innovation and everyday importance of one of our most trusted tools.
A Brief History of the Knife
Knives are one of the oldest and most important tools known to humanity. Their history dates back to primitive times and while they have evolved over time, their usefulness hasn’t changed.
For more than 75 years, Cutco has stood as a symbol of quality in the kitchen. They are American made, crafted by skilled professionals and made to the highest standards of excellence. Our attention to detail and commitment to exceptional service has put Cutco at the center of many family meals, making it the cutlery that home cooks have relied on for decades.
When was the first Cutco Knife crafted? Answer 1949 Cutco has been crafting American-made knives for more than 75 years.
- 1800s
- The U.S. cutlery industry begins in New England when cutlers from England’s Sheffield cutlery industry begin to settle along the East coast.
- 1912
- It was discovered that adding chromium to carbon steel resisted rusting, the new metal was called stainless steel. While rust-resistant, the blades were softer than high carbon blades and hard to maintain.
- 1920
- High-carbon stainless steel, which blends a specific ratio of iron, carbon, chromium and other metals improves upon the metallurgy of a knife blade allowing it to resist rust and still hold a sharp edge.
- 1949
- Cutco Cutlery begins manufacturing knives in Olean, New York.
- 1952
- Renowned industrial designer Thomas Lamb invents the “hand perfect” handle, which is added to Cutco Knives.
- 1960
- The Double-D® (double durable) grind was added to certain Cutco Knives. It creates a series of strategically angled razor-sharp cutting edges along the blade for improved cutting efficiency.
- Today
- Knives remain one of the most used tools in kitchens and outdoor life, evolving alongside how we live and cook.
